Plus, of course, the cost of a bike, the clothing, the insurance, the road tax, the MOT, the maintenance and the fuel.

You can buy a used 125cc bike for about 200 but make sure it has an MOT if it's 3 years old or more, and for 200 it will be.

If you're thinking of buying a used bike (or any vehicle) it might be worth having it checked out by mycarcheck.com. You get an immediate online vehicle data check which includes stolen/police interest, write off/accident damage, scrapped by the DVLA, plate transfers, former keepers, full VIN/chassis check, make and model, engine number and size, colour and colour changes, imported or exported and date first registered. Checks start at only £4.95.

Hiring a 125cc bike will cost something like 30 pounds a day or 150 a week with a deposit of about 150.

A new crash helmet can cost from 40 to 500. Jacket 80+. Boots 40+. Gloves 10 to 100. You can get them cheaper second hand but we would advise that you buy at least the crash helmet new.

Insurance costs - it depends on your age, the size of the bike and the area where you live. One of the UK market leaders for motorcycle insurance is Bennetts. To get an online quote please click on the banner below. You can save the quote they give you so you don't have to complete the form again if you go back again later.
